Wrexham Juniors annual dinner
Wrexham Juniors ended a very successful season with their annual Dinner and Presentation evening last Friday when over forty boys and girls attended to applaud the prize winners of the last few months including the winners of the Junior Honours Boards events and team competitions.
The guest speaker was senior member Mr. Jack Gittins who interested the juniors with his various stories and recollections. The event has run for the past five years and has gained support each year as more and more of the young members have become involved. Organised by Junior Organiser Mr. Phil Thomas, and assisted by the Junior Welfare Officer Mrs Mair Williams and club Professional Paul Williams, the evening proved a success for all concerned.
Janet Lloyd and Jean Jones were again successful in the Ladies’ nine holes competition of last Tuesday when they handed in a card reading 16 points, reflected in weather conditions that were less than perfect. Second came Wendy Roberts and Janet Brand with a similar total but a less good final six holes. This Tuesday morning presents the problem of heavy rain and overnight frost which is creating a “shall we, shan’t we ” frame of mind for the more sensible ladies who are scheduled to play a further nine holes event.
My office window overlooks the first tee, and already several men have made the ultimate sacrifice and walked in following an eight o’clock start but a nine o’clock downpour of freezing rain. The coffee machine is working overtime as I write.
The Vale of Llangollen veterans played a Texas Scramble over eleven holes last Thursday when fifty six contested the event. Winners were Brian Dolamore, S F Jones, Keith Nash and John Tate with 34.4 net
Second came Alan Jeffreys, familiarly known as “one putt Al”, Peter Wright, John Pritchard and Nev Rawcliffe with 34.9 and then, in third place, Ray Jarvis, George Arrowsmith, John T. Hughes and Malcolm Roxborough with 35.4.
The Two Ball Texas Scramble scheduled to be played last Saturday morning at Wrexham suffered very badly because of dense fog. Our benchmark is the ability to see the Sycamore tree to the right of the first fairway at a distance of some two hundred and eighty five yards. This should be visible for at least five uninterrupted minutes before we give the go ahead to commence play.
Despite changing the format in our heads as the minutes ticked by, working out play over fifteen holes, then eleven holes and then nine holes, it became painfully obvious that the day was lost and that there would be no play at all.
Clays Golf Club played a yellow ball competition over seventeen holes which featured a win for Maelor Davies, Peter Lynch, Jack Brown and Andy Mitchell with 151 points. The runners up with 147 points were Bill Hughes, Bill Parry, Ray Martin and Peter Frazer with Ray having an eagle two on the 365 yards par 4 fourteenth hole. Using a driver, followed by a rescue club, he enjoyed the view of the shot disappearing down the hole.
The Seniors Individual Stableford played over the same seventeen holes again featured Ray Martin who handed in 40 points to lead by six points from Lou Bush, Stewart Poole and Dave Lambert who all returned with 34. Ray’s score represented playing a 71 gross off eight handicap.
The Shop Stableford went ahead last Saturday despite restricted visibility and saw Stuart Rogers hand in 41 points followed by Karl Matthias on 39 and then Ceri Anderson on 38. A identical event the following day witnessed a win for Kevin Lee Roberts with 39 points from Michael Bryne on the same numbers and Neil Gledhill with 38.
The weather forecast for the tail end of the week does not appear too rosy and will no doubt affect the visiting societies that will be attending local clubs in the run up to Christmas. Let’s hope that we can get a game before the really bad weather sets in.
